BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT
CHILD conceptualized the RAW (Reading and Writing) programme in 2006 to improve the communication skills (reading, writing and understanding) in English among Malaysian children particularly in the rural schools. In the RAW project, children learn to read and write with ease in a fun loving way to improve the command of English.
The RAW programme has been tested and proven as an excellent way to improve language skills. The RAW Project initially funded by HSBC in collaboration with CHILD commenced in the year 2006 with 17 schools in Selangor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Perak and Pahang. In 2007 the RAW Project was further expanded under Phase two to another 12 schools in 2 more states, viz, Kelantan and Kedah. In 2009 the Project under Phase three, expanded to cover 6 more schools in Johor, which included for the first time two Orang Asli Schools as well! Phase four in 2010 covered 4 schools in Pulau Pinang and 3 schools in Terengganu.
With the help of the Selangor State Government Fund, RAW Programme was implemented in 25 schools in 2009. Notwithstanding the above, on the adviced of the funder, CHILD introduced a new dimension of creative thinking to RAW and name it the new entity CRAW (Creative Reading and Writing) funded by Hong Leong Foundation. Creative thinking skills are essential for success in learning and success in life. Creative thinking involves a range of skills that can be promoted across the curriculum. There is potential for creative thinking in all fields of human activity, and in all lessons. CHILD aims to develop children’s capacity for original ideas and creative achievement.
Promoting creative thinking is a powerful way of engaging children with their learning. Children who are encouraged to think creatively show increased levels of motivation and self esteem. Creativity prepares them with the flexible skills they will need to face an uncertain future. Developing the capacity to be creative can enrich their lives and help them to contribute to a better society.
